The photographs taken with cameras are usually loaded with distortions, where the source of these distortions is an unperfection of the used lens system.

In the most cases picture is emphasized in the central part of the image; distortion might be also found in the corners of the image.

Above picture shows two main types of distortions: pincushion distortion and barrel distortion. As it visible, the name of the distortion come from way of deformation of the given image.

Besides geometric distortion one can find also chromatic aberrations. Because the aberrations (lens distortions) can't be totally removed in the lens production process, it is necessary to find, how the distortions might be reduced. Use of professional devices (like photogrammetric cameras) is rather unprofitable - often one has only amateur equipment.

By the cooperation with Maciej Gawe³ (also the Graduate of University of Zielona Góra) we developed a method, which allows to fast and efficiently calibrate the lens system (for geometric lens distortion).
Our methods make possible to fast determine the profile of the given camera. With include of the automatic pattern recognition it makes correction fully automatic.

This page contains software that makes correction possible. Thanks to the over one-year research, it is possible to reduce most of the geometric distortion in order to get satisfied quality of the result image. Research results are also presented on this page; popular digital cameras were tested - the proper distortion profiles charts are available to see. One can download software with profiles suitably to his/hers camera model.

I invite You to the page and see through the research results. Interested persons please contact (mail in the AUTHORS section).

I hope You enjoy it
